伝統の鎌倉彫 Outstanding handwork of Kamakura engraving

皆さまこんにちは、
先月末に日本からコンテナが到着し、
サンナカウエストでは現在、新しい商品が展示されています。
今日はその新しく仲間入りした中の商品をご紹介しましょう。
Aloha everyone, thank you for visiting our blog.
We've had the new shipment from Japan at the end of last month,
and new items started to be displayed inside the store.
I will introduce one of those new items called
"Kamakura-bori(Engraving in Kamakura style)"


鎌倉彫とは日本有数の漆器工芸品の一つで
古くから愛されてきた伝統品です。
Kamakura-bori has been one of the traditional lacquer crafts in Japan.


簡単にその歴史と特徴、製造工程などをご説明します。
鎌倉彫の起源は古く、今から遡ることおよそ1000年前・・・
1192年に日本では新しい政府（幕府）が誕生しました。
Here is a short explanation of its history, feature and manfacturing process.
Almost one thousand years ago in Japan,
a new government (bakuhu) was established in 1192.












その新幕府が拠点としたのはそれまでの西の都から
遠く東の「鎌倉」と呼ばれる地方でした。
今でこそ鎌倉は古都として多くの人で賑わっていますが、
当時は漁村の人々が多く生活していた場所でもあり、
幕府樹立当初は政務を行う建物や武士たちの住居、商店街などの都市整備に繁忙を極めたそうです。
The administration moved from the west side of Japan where it used to be as a capital for long all the way to the east side of Japan called Kamakura.
At that time, Kamakura has been a fishing village area,
so it must have been very hard to change Kamakura to be a Japanese new capital.
They had to build gpvernment buildings, houses for soldiers, shopping district
and others.





















さて、そんな新都市鎌倉で、都市整備の次に幕府が尽力したのが
禅宗の導入でした。
禅宗の書物や美術品を始めとした調度一式が中国から取寄せられました。
そして、日本の仏師の匠たちがその技術を独自の手法で発展させた漆芸品が鎌倉彫の所以です。
The next step which Kamakura government exerted is introducing Zen Buddhism
from China.
A tons of Zen books and artifacts were brought to Japan.
Then, Japanese sculptors of Buddhism started to develop new laquer crafts
with their outstanding skills and techniques.
That was the very beginning of Kamakura-bori.



様々なスタイルがありますが、サンナカウエストに展示されている製品は
全体を覆う浅彫りと中央に深く掘られた菖蒲などの草花の文様が特徴です。
彫り手による自由かつ力強いリズミカルな造形表現と漆の潤いある光沢と堅牢さを兼ねそろえています。
Actually, there are many varieties of Kanakura-bori,
but light carving which covers the whole and pattern of a flower carved in the center are the charcteristics of the products that we have in stock at this moment.
It is worth to see the powerful and rhythmic technique by craftsman and
see the beautifully shining lacquer.


漆を使った工芸品ということで職人がたくさんの愛情と手間をかけて製作しています。
十分な乾燥を経てから生地作りを行い、彫っていきます。
その後、彫刻を生かすため漆を浅く何度も重ねおよそ60回ほど繰り返します。
全て手作りで行われていきます。
It takes very long to produce Kamakura-bori.
We have to wait for the wood to be dried completely before engraving,
and lacquer is coated on it again and again. (appx.60 times)

職人達が丹精込めて作った鎌倉彫の商品を

現在、鎌倉彫の鏡台、小物家具、箪笥をご用意しております。
今回新しく仲間入りした鎌倉彫は大きさもかわいらしい洋服箪笥です。
How do you like Kamakura-bori?
You can really feel the skillful Kamakura-bori items inside the store.
We do have a dresser, a mini box, and a cloth chest.

Shirakawa Village 白川郷

Aloha everyone!
みなさん、こんにちは。

Today, I introduced Shiarakawa village to everyone.
今日は白川村をご紹介します。

Last January my friend went to Gifu with husband.
It took several hours by bus from the office tour from Nagoya-city even located next prefecture!
Shirakawa Village is located in the northwestern part of Gifu Pref.
1月に友人が白川村へ行きました。
名古屋のすぐ隣の県ですが、なぜか遠いです。

They looked at a World Heritage, wooden houses with steep rafter roofs in Sirakawa there.
世界遺産白川郷があります。
合掌造りの家々を見ることが出来ます。

It was lots of snow falling.冬には大雪になります。
That made more beautiful scene over there.

In Japan, a big typhoon is running around that I hear recently.
日本では大型台風が上陸していると聞いています。

Today it is a LABOR DAY.
Most of Offices are closed in Gentry Pacific Design center.
But I sometimes hear music from second floor or next Piano shop.
今日はアメリカ版、勤労感謝の日です。
なので、ジェントリーのオフィスはどこもお休みです。
隣から、2Fから音楽が時々聞こえてきます。

Peony 牡丹の花

Peony;Paeonia suffruticosa　　牡丹の花

皆さん、こんにちは。

Have you ever seen Botan(Paeonia suffruticosa)flower?
牡丹の花を見たことがありますか？

It is blooming Spring and Fall.
春と秋に咲きます。


This is the words that compared a characteristic of the way of blooming of these flowers to the beauty of the woman.
If "I stand peony, if I sit down a peony, the walking figure lily"
「立てば芍薬、座れば牡丹、歩く姿は百合の花」というよく知られた言葉がありますが、これはこの花達の咲き方の特徴を女性の美しさに例えた言葉です。







In the Chinese Korean Peninsulas, it is significance of the faith.
It is one of the flowers liked very much.
It is a flower meaning wealthy and happiness.
It is also called King of Flower in Asia.
中国 朝鮮半島などでは、信仰の意味合いから大変好まれる花の一つであります。
幸福 富貴などを意味する花です。 その意味から花の王者とも言われています。

Bamboo charcoal 竹炭

Bamboo charcoal is made of bamboo by means of a pyrolysis process.
竹炭（ちくたん、たけすみ）とは、竹を人為的に炭化させたものです。
Bamboo charcoal is used as a life assistance function purpose in Japan most likely, it is quite diffrent way to use general charcoal.
主に燃料炭として使われる木炭と違い、竹炭は生活補助機能目的として利用されることが多いそうです。


The bamboo charcoal penetrates all holes in porous (full of holes of several microns) with the outside. Because air and water pass, it is filtered this hole, and various toxic substances and smells are structure adsorbed inside of the bamboo charcoal.
竹炭は、多孔質（数ミクロンの穴だらけ）で、どの穴も外界と貫通しています。この穴を空気や水が通過することで濾過され、さまざまな有害物質や臭いが竹炭の内部に吸着されていくしくみです。










Lately I found a Bamboo charcoal soap. Is it beauty to use for my skin?ヾ(￣∇￣=ﾉ
最近は竹炭石鹸などもあります。お肌がきれいになるのでしょうか？


The bamboo charcoal produces the many wonderful characteristics including deodorization, humidity adjustment (moisture absorption, earth-water preservation), the air cleanliness, nature mineral action, the immunologic effect. Furthermore, it is called that there are various effects in a warm temperature effect (far infrared rays) and an anion effect, interception, the absorption of the electromagnetic wave to bamboo charcoal.
竹炭は消臭・湿度調整（吸湿・保水）・空気清浄・天然ミネラル作用・免疫作用など、数多くの驚異的特性を生み出しています。さらに、温熱効果（遠赤外線）や、マイナスイオン効果、電磁波の遮断・吸収等、竹炭にはさまざまな効果があると言われています。

I am going to show you Colorful Wedding Kimono patterns today.
今日は色内掛けの模様について説明いたします。

Yesterday, Roko-san explained Japanese patterns.
昨日はりょうこさんが日本の模様について説明しました。

So, I will show you Beautiful wedding kimono patterns to you in the Sannaka-WEST shop.

About Red color+;In China, the red is considered to be a color indicating the loyalty;In the folklore of "the talisman against evil" have a meaning.
赤い色について；中国においては、赤は忠義を示す色とされ,民俗学において、赤には「魔除け」の意味があるとされます。

Red is the most popular color, but the variation of the color is still rich recently.
今でも赤色は最もポピュラーな色ですが、最近は色のバリエーションも豊富です。

Plum as a symbol of celebration , chrysanthemum a symbol of ageless and longevity and
Two cranes pray for reproduction and the longevity of the couple, too.
梅の花は喜びのモチーフとして、菊の花は不老長寿をあらわし、二匹の鶴も夫婦の再生と長寿を願います。








Peony is a symbol of wealth and high status because of its gorgeous bloom.
牡丹の花は富の繁栄を願います。






On KIKU TV　in Hawaii, I watched same meaning of painting in China.
中国でも同じ意味を持つとハワイのキクテレビで紹介されていました。







Because it is beautiful figure, vitality, High dignity, the peacock is used for much design.
孔雀は美しい姿・強い生命力・気高さなので多くの意匠に用いられます。


For example, if the pair of the peacock is same as throughout the life　in India, Peacocks seem to be drawn well now at the local wedding ceremony .

例えばインドでは孔雀のつがいは生涯一緒だといことから、インドのある地域の結婚式では現在でも孔雀がよく描かれているそうです。


華麗な刺繍や織り模様を施した内掛は、おめでたい文様を配したもので息を飲むばかりの華やかさです。

日本の文様の意味 Japanese patterns

皆さまこんにちは！
日本ではお盆休みがスタートし、
ハワイへ訪れる日本人観光客が激増しているそうです。
Aloha, everyone!!
Summer vacation (we call it obon yasumi) has just started in japan,
and I heard that many many Japanese people are visiting to Hawaii.


今日は日本の芸術品などにもよく見られる
伝統的な文様に隠された意味をご紹介したいと思います。
Today, I would like to introduce the meanings of Japanese traditional designs and patterns.


昔から美術品や生活用品のデザインに
数多くの植物や動物、自然的事物が文様に使用されることがありますが、
それは何も日本だけに限った事ではありませんね。
西洋のキリスト教絵画には多産を暗示するざくろをキリストが抱えていたり、
勝利の象徴としてヤシ（棕櫚）が描かれる事も多々あります。
Traditionally, people has used a variety of different kinds of plants, animals,
natural things and others as patterns on art objects and household goods.
Of course, it doesn't happen not only in Japan but also in the Western world.
For example, we know that there are many pictures of Christ holding a pomegranate
which is painted as a symbol of fertility and productivity.
Also, palm trees are painted in the Western religion art as a symbol of victory.


一つのデザインを通じてそこに隠された他の意味を暗示する、という表現が
東洋西洋問わず非常に興味深いですね。
In this way, both Eastern and Western people has expressed hidden meanings with using differnt objects since ancient times.


さて、メインは日本の文様についてです。
以下に代表的な文様の種類と解説を載せていきます。
So, what kind of objects have been used in Japanese patterns?
I will introduce some major designs in the below.


＜青海波＞ waves and swells
同じ波がいくつも続くことから繁栄・平安の象徴として使われます。
A symbol of prosperity and peace because of its continuity.

















＜松＞ pine tree
松竹梅の組み合わせで祝い事のしるし、
または寿命が長い松の木は長寿や成熟のイメージとして用いられます。
A symbol of celebration at the combination of pine tree, bamboo and plum.
Also, a symbol of longevity and maturity because of it lives long.











＜竹＞ bamboo
松竹梅の組み合わせで祝い事のしるし、
または冬でも青々と勢いよく茂る事から威勢のいいものとして用いられます。
A symbol of celebration at the combination of pine tree, bamboo and plum.
Also, a symbol of liveliness and energy because of it grows thick even in Winter.












＜梅＞ plum
松竹梅の組み合わせで祝い事のしるし、
また梅だけでは春の訪れを喜ぶ新春のモチーフとして使われます。
A symbol of celebration at the combination of pine tree, bamboo and plum.
Also, a symbol of delight at the coming of Spring.












＜牡丹＞ peony
大きく華やかな姿から富や身分の高さを象徴します。
A symbol of wealth and high status because of its gorgeous bloom.










＜菊＞ chrysanthemum
秋の花であり不老長寿を表すこともあります。
A symbol of ageless and longevity.











＜蝶＞ butterfly
さなぎから美しい成虫に移り変わる蝶は復活や変化の象徴として用いられます。
A symbol of revival and change because it changes from pupa to beautiful butterfly.













＜鶴＞ crane
鶴は千年生きるという慣用句があるように長寿の鳥とされ、おめでたい柄として人気があります。
A symbol of longevity because it came from a Japanese idiom which says "Crane lives
a thousand years (tsuru wa sennen)."












＜扇子＞ fan
末広がりの形から発展や繁栄を意図するイメージとして使われます。
A symbol of development and progress because of its expanding-shape.












＜亀甲＞ turtle shell
長寿の動物とされる亀の甲羅をデザインした六角形の形は縁起の良い文様とされています。
A symbol of good luck because of its hexagon shell. Turtle is considered to live for
ten thousand years in a Japanese idiom (kame wa mannen).











＜果物＞ fruit
実りのイメージから子孫繁栄を表すおめでたい柄とされます。
A symbol of fertility.









どうですか？
今回ご紹介したのはほんの数例に過ぎませんが、
なるほど！と思うデザインがたくさんありますよね。
In this way, there are many designs used in Japanese objects,
and there are other more patterns!


Sannaka-WESTにある商品にもこういったデザインが多く多用されています。
ご家族やご友人のお祝い事の際に、鶴が描かれた掛軸を贈ったり、
牡丹の描かれた扇子を贈ってそのデザインの意味をご説明されたらきっと喜ばれる事でしょう。

Charms お守り

アロハ　みなさん！

Today I talked about " Why do the Japanese have raccoons in front of a store"?
今日は「なぜ狸の置物がお店の前に置いてあるのでしょうか？」と言うことについてお話します。

Luck is loved by everyone in Japan and everywhere.
日本でもどこの国でも「幸運」は皆さまに愛されています。

Especially,anyone who runs a business or wishes a blessed their life.
特に、ビジネスをしている人や、人生に幸運を呼び込みたい人には大切です。

Even more important in Japan because the people are little superstitious.
日本人には少し迷信深く、このような置物を大切にします。


They often place some kind of lucky charm in front of stores, in the hopes that business will run smoothly and luckly.
ビジネスが上手くいく事を願って、お店にお守りを置いたりしています。


Statues of tanuki can be found outside many Japanese temples, restaurants, and shops ; especially in front of some noodle shops.
タヌキの置物は寺院、レストラン、お店の前でよく見かけます。特に麺類のお店の前が多いようです。


These comical statues often wear big cone-shaped hats, have a funny&cute smile, and carry a bottle of sake in one hand with a promissory note or empty(why?) purse in the other hand.
Aren't they cute, are they?
このちょっとコミカルな置物は大きな笠をかぶり、笑みを浮かべ、徳利と通帳時には財布などを持っています。
可愛いですね！






This particular animal has eight special traits that are supposed to bring good fortune.

1.The hat symbolizes protection against trouble or bad weather.
2.The big eyes perceive the environment and help make good decisions.
3.A sake bottle represents virtue.
4.A big tail provides steadiness and strength until success is achieved.
5.over-sized testicles symbolize financial luck.
6.A promissory note represents trust or confidence;
7.A big belly symbolizes bold and calm decisiveness.
8.happy-party smile!(soooo charming!)

この置物には８つの幸運の意味があります。
1.笠は「思わざる悪事災難避けるため用心常に身をまもる笠」　
2.大きな目は「何事も前後左右に気を配り正しく見つむることな忘れそ」　
3.徳利は「恵まれし飲食のみにこと足利て徳はひそかに我身につけん」　
4.尾は「なに事も終わりは大きくしっかりと 身を立てるこそ真の幸福」　
5.おおきな金袋は「金銭の宝は自由自在なる運用をなせ」　
6.通帳は「世渡りは先ず信用が第一ぞ活動常に四通八達」　
7.大きな腹は「もの事は常に落ち着きさりながら 決断力の大胆をもて」　
8.ハッピー・パーティー・スマイル（とってもキュートですね！）
